The Horrors of Chemmani: A Mass Grave of Silence

In the heart of Sri Lanka's war-torn North, beneath the earth in a quiet village called Chemmani, a grim truth continues to surface. In 1998, a Sri Lankan soldier confessed to the location of a mass grave — the burial site of dozens, possibly hundreds, of Tamil civilians who disappeared during the final years of the civil war. His testimony shocked the nation and stirred the international community.

Excavations in 1999 revealed 15 bodies. But efforts stalled. For over two decades, calls for deeper investigation were ignored. Until now.

In July 2025, the second phase of excavation was initiated under pressure from global human rights organizations. On Day 16 of this phase, forensic teams uncovered seven additional human bone fragments, bringing the total to **65 skeletal remains**. These findings include remains of women, young men, and what experts believe could be minors — victims of extrajudicial executions.
